Until recently, the number of cigar factories in Nicaragua was few and far between.

This delay into Nicaragua was unfortunate due to the quality and diversity of tobacco grown in this country. This is now a thing of the past. Now for many smokers Nicaraguan cigars are a favored staple.

Cigar fans can thank the rich soil that has been supplied nutrients by a multitude of volcanoes.

When the land was formed, it was these volcanoes (often at different depths into the Earth) created a host of necessary nutrients for the main tobacco-growing regions in Nicaragua.

The 4 Main Growing Regions for Nicaraguan Cigar Tobacco

Esteli – With rich, black soil, produces a full flavored leaf (typically the strongest in Nicaragua).

Condega – It’s rocky soil and heavy cloud cover produce great “sun-grown” tobacco for wrappers.

Ometepe – The small island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua produces tobacco with distinct sweet and smoky flovor profile.

Jalapa – Another area known for producing great wrappers, Jalapa can also be a very complex tobacco – oftentimes with different “personally” from field to field.

Most of the cigars are all produced in a small town about 2 hours inland called “Esteli.”

Many cigar makers call Nicaragua home (or it is their second home). Makers such as: Rocky Patel, Perdomo, Drew Estate, Joya de Nicaragua, AJ Fernandez, Nomad, Padron, Oliva, Don Pepin Garcia, and CAO all blend and manufacture cigars in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is a virtual playground for cigar blenders, with a multitude of offerings, allowing each blender to create his or her signature style.
